It is commonly acknowledged that seating began with the Egyptians at around 3000 B.C., evolving over the years and developing in shape, design and use. As new materials and methods became available, the upholsterer started to form new padded styles and shapes for comfort and style.
The term "Chesterfield" in relation to sofas originates from pieces made for the Earl of Chesterfield, who was himself a trendsetter of the period, thus the style quickly became fashionable.
Here at Robinson of England we offer our customers a huge selection of Chesterfield furniture, whether it be new, used or original Victorian and Edwardian antique pieces.
All of our styles have been developed from the original pieces we have had the pleasure of restoring over the years.
Quite simply, no! Many people are lead to believe that Chesterfield furniture is made by a company called Chesterfield.
Chesterfield is a style — quite possibly the most popular single style of upholstered furniture in the world.
There are companies that have revolutionised the way in which furniture, including the Chesterfield sofa, is made. These include Howard & Sons, who patented the 'elastic seat'.
We are possibly one of the last remaining companies to still craft our pieces in a true 19th century manner, including full hand-tacking, horse tail only filling and hand dyed leathers.
