We know from our experience as dealers in 19th and 20th century furniture and scientific tests have proven that horsehair and horse tail create an excellent micro-climate.

In order to craft the very best in both design and materials, we combine our 8-point-hand-tied loose coil springs with natural fibres to provide the finest and most sustainable pieces for both your home and the environment.

All of our natural fibres offer natural ventilation, elasticity, durability and resilience. In addition their capillary properties ensure a natural micro-climate that regulates temperature and moisture for optimum comfort in the warm summer or cool winter months.

The regulation of moisture is key to the longevity of your leather furniture. We neither want too much moisture nor too little.

Horse tail: - Horsetail is a hollow fibre that retains its elasticity and transports humidity away from the leathers to ensures a comfortable micro-climate. The quick-drying property of horsehair and horsetail is perfect for elevating the life span of four furniture.

The Art of Leather

Pre-Dyed

Our carefully chosen tannery’s produce the finest of leathers and selecting a pre-dyed tannery leather will ensure a very even finish for your piece.

Hand Dyed

Our hand dyed russet hides are produced for us with perfection in mind. They are less than the top 1% of the worlds upholstery leathers such is the quality. Wabi-Sabi is the Japanese ethos of perfection in its very nature. Our russet leathers adhere to this concept perfectly.

With their natural scars, markings and variations in absorbency rates across the hides ensures individual perfection every time. We upholster your piece in the raw leather and once complete we mix our dyes for your individual pieces and dye them by hand. The natural patina is the perfection that we are aiming for.

In addition, with one eye in the future, hand dyed pieces are possibly certainly hold the highest intrinsic values in the vintage and antique markets. The way in which the leathers wear is truly unsurpassable.

Framing our Work

Beech Wood

A solid beech wood frame is unquestionably the very best to build our furniture frames. It has very few knots and the right grain is very smooth which ensures there are no weak points to split. Doweled, glued and screwed is so strong otherwise is fail safe.

Our Mortise & Tenon jointed frames are an art in themselves. Hand cut and very labour intensive the surface area and contact points for glueing is particularly large and the wedges ensure a fail-safe frame for generations to come.

Fixings

Staples are a perfect option when we are reducing our man hours and give a very neat finish. With our speediest crafting time at 9/10 working days, this rises to around 28 days when a piece is fully hand tacked.

Brass tacks are used to ensure the extreme longevity of our legacy pieces. Really the finest manner of crafting of the world’s finest furniture. Brass tacks to not corrode and have such a strong hold in the frame, we have seen examples of circa 150 year old sofas which still have their seats in place.

The seat is main load bearing area of any sofa or chair which is why we also offer to hand tack the seats only as an option.
